Why is it important to get a COVID-19 vaccine?

Around the world, countries are implementing COVID-19 vaccination programmes, with many prioritising vaccines to those at most risk in their population. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), most COVID-19 vaccines are safe for people aged 18 years or older1, however it is recommended to speak to your medical professional who can best advise individuals on whether or not they should receive a COVID-19 vaccine based on their medical history. We recommend everyone who is eligible to receive the vaccine, should get vaccinated when they are invited to do so, as not only will it help decrease the chances of you contracting and getting seriously ill with COVID-19, but it’s a significant step in getting the world back to normal. It also protects those around you, especially those who may be more vulnerable.

We understand that some people may be nervous about getting vaccinated. Each country will have its own regulatory body that will review the clinical data to ensure that a COVID-19 vaccine meets its strict standards of safety, quality, and effectiveness before approval is given for use.  While more COVID-19 vaccines are being developed, these routine processes and procedures remain in place to ensure the safety of any vaccine that is authorised or approved for use.

We encourage anyone with concerns about getting the vaccine to speak with your primary care provider or pharmacist. We understand some people have concerns and questions about the vaccine because they have a medical condition or other medications. Still, we strongly encourage you to speak to your primary care provider.

Continue to be vigilant

Most vaccines require two doses, check with your primary care provider whether you need a second dose and when you should get it. Even after you are vaccinated against COVID-19 keep taking precautions. You should continue to adhere to government guidance because we’re still learning how vaccines will affect the spread of COVID-19. Continue to wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds or using alcohol-based hand sanitiser, particularly after visiting public spaces. It’s also really important to try and maintain at least 1M+ distance from other people and wear a mask if physical distancing is not possible.

Following the above principles is the most effective way to protect against the spread of COVID-19. We know it can be frustrating at times, but every small precaution we take can bring us one step closer to normality.
