A short note from Dr. Shoba Subramanian on World Blood Donor Day:

June 14th is World Blood Donor Day, an annual occasion for countries worldwide to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products. In total, 79 countries collect more than 90% of their blood supply from voluntary unpaid blood donors1, so today is the perfect opportunity to thank donors for their contribution, saving millions of lives a year.

The need for safe blood is universal. Safe blood is critical both for treatments and urgent interventions. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and experience a higher quality of life. Donated blood also supports complex medical procedures. Having enough blood to save lives every day can only be provided through regular blood donations. Today we urge more people worldwide to become lifesavers by regularly volunteering to donate blood.
