Navigating healthcare payments while living or travelling internationally can seem complex, but most global health plans offer clear pathways to help members access and pay for medical services with minimal hassle. Here’s how the process typically works:

1. Direct payment to providers

Many international health plans have agreements with a wide network of healthcare providers around the world. When visiting a provider within the UnitedHealthcare Global network, healthcare bills are usually sent directly to UnitedHealthcare Global for payment. This arrangement helps minimise out-of-pocket expenses and eliminates the need to complete a claim form. To find a provider within the network, use the myUHCGlobal app or member portal.

For emergency treatment, members should present their Member Card when they arrive at hospital or clinic. The medical provider may ask the patient to sign a pre-authorisation form. For UnitedHealthcare Global members, the medical provider will send the claim directly to us if they are in the UnitedHealthcare Global network. We will pay the medical provider directly, allowing for any deductible or co-insurance you have paid.

2. Guarantee of payment (GOP)

If care is needed from a provider who does not have a direct payment agreement with an insurer, a guarantee of payment (GOP) may be required. Before treatment, the provider or the patient can request a GOP by contacting the insurer using the details Member Card, through the app or member portal. Once approved, the insurer issues a GOP and arranges payment directly with the provider, ensuring access to care without delay.

3. Pay and claim

In some cases, patients may be asked to pay for care at the point of service. If this happens, they can seek reimbursement for eligible medical expenses by submitting a claim through the insurer’s online portal or mobile app like the myUHCGlobal app or member portal in less than 90 seconds. At UnitedHealthcare Global, most claims are processed within about two weeks, with payments typically made within an additional week.

International health plans are designed to reduce financial barriers to care, whether through direct payment, guarantees of payment or efficient claims processes. Understanding these pathways helps individuals access the care they need, wherever they are in the world.
