Read Dr. Phil Sharples short note about Salt Awareness Week:

“It is a well-known fact that too much salt is not good for you – but most people consume between 9 and 16 grams a day, around double the recommended intake.1 In celebration of Salt Awareness Week, we highlight the benefits of shaking the salt habit to improve public health. The first official Salt Awareness Week was in 2008, with the purpose of raising awareness of where salt comes from in the diet.Over a decade later, the goal of reducing salt consumption is still on the agenda.

Too much salt increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks and other circulatory diseases.3 There can be so much hidden salt in our diets, with the majority of our consumption coming from packaged foods. You can take action simply by checking the labels on your food and cutting out processed snacks in your diet. These small steps can make a huge difference to maintain a healthy heart and diet.” - Dr. Phil Sharples, Chief Medical Officer, Global Solutions, UnitedHealthcare Global
