August is Psoriasis Action Month
Each August, the health community comes together to recognise Psoriasis Action Month. Over 100 million people worldwide are affected by this condition1, however, there is no evident cause or cure. Symptoms can vary, presenting as everything from rashes to an irritated scalp. Whilst people with psoriasis are diagnosed differently, common trigger symptoms include stress, alcohol, smoking or infections.2
The severity of symptoms and comorbidities, such as arthritis and cardiovascular diseases, has prompted the World Health Organisation to adopt a resolution recognising the severity of psoriasis as a chronic condition. The resolution notes that psoriasis can create a psychosocial burden, with stigmatisation in the workplace and body image issues amongst the most commonly cited factors.
Organised by the National Psoriasis Foundation, this year's Psoriasis Action Month seeks to highlight how psoriasis affects people from all areas of life in our communities.1 At UnitedHealthcare Global, we encourage anyone with symptoms to get regular check-ups and treatments to help reduce the risk of people suffering in silence.
